Disney’s Aladdin the Musical is coming to Adelaide in 2019
GOOD NEWS from the Genie to all Disney fans in South Australia. Your wish has been granted – Disney’s Aladdin is coming to Adelaide in 2019!
From the producers of Mary Poppins and The Lion King, the story of a street urchin roaming the Arabian nights finally comes to life in the Adelaide Festival Theatre in April 2019. With the theatrical magic of Disney musicals already sweeping across other Australian cities, the time for Adelaide is nigh – It’s the first time for a Disney Theatrical production to feature in South Australia. According to the President of Disney Theatrical Production, Thomas Schumacher, Australians have in the past welcomed Disney shows with warmth and affection, “But we know that South Australians have had to travel to those other cities to see those shows.” Now it’s time for the shows to come to them!
Since it’s premiere at Broadway’s New Amsterdam Theatre 4 years ago, Aladdin has grown into one of the standout blockbusters with productions in North America, London, Hamburg, and even Tokyo. Much like its source Academy Award-winning animated film, Aladdin tickets were sold to millions of viewers and broken 14 records in the New Amsterdam Theatre House.
The Australian production includes a creative team of Ken Travis (sound designer), Gregg Barnes (Tony-winning consume designer), Natasha Katz (Tony-winning lighting designer), Bob Crowley (Tony-winning scenic designer), Milagros Medina-Cerdeira (makeup designer), Josh Marquette (hair designer), and Jim Steinmeyer (illusion designer).
The audience will be treated to a plethora of songs including a few written specifically for the stage and five beloved songs from the Award-winning soundtrack of Aladdin such as “Arabian Nights” and “A Whole New World.” Michael Kosarin will head the music team as the music director and supervisor with support from Gen Kelly (music arranger) and Danny Troob (orchestrator).
A fabulous cast, 337 lavish costumes (500,000 Swarovski crystals, 712 styles of beads and, 1225 fabrics), mindblowing special effects, and breathtaking sets are sure to make Aladdin memorable. The fantasy city of Agrabah including the Cave of Wonders, the Sultan Palace, and even the colourful marketplace will be recreated from the over 100 tonnes of stage material that will be transported to Adelaide.
If the Melbourne performance in 2017 is anything to go by, Aladdin The Musical is a must see show for everyone. With the waitlist open, you better start prepping your family for some Arabian magic as you anticipate the ticket pre-sale in October 2018.
